BODY IN NEW RIVER HAD BULLET WOUNDS
A 68-year-old man whose body was found in the New River near Buck Dam in Carroll County died from multiple gunshot wounds, a medical examiner said Monday.
Searchers found the body of Albert Hamilton Sr., who lived in the Comers Rock section of Grayson County, shortly before noon Saturday. He had been reported missing in mid-December.
A cinder block had been tied to the body to keep it under water.
Dr. William Massello, state medical examiner in Roanoke, said death was caused by gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
He said the condition of the body was consistent with death having occurred when Hamilton was reported missing.
A spokesman at the Grayson County Sheriff's Department said Monday that the investigation pointed authorities to the Buck Dam area of Carroll County, just off Virginia 94 between Ivanhoe and Fries.
The department was helped by the Maryland-based Mid-Atlantic Dogs Inc., a firm with dogs trained to search in water. The Baywood Search and Rescue Team and authorities from Carroll and Grayson counties and the city of Galax also helped.
The dogs pinpointed the area and the body was recovered by a team of divers from Carroll, Grayson and Galax.
