ROANOKE CITY COUNCIL

Approved a $30,000 contract with consultant engineers to prepare plans for and oversee construction of a $300,000 storage reservoir for the Falling Creek water filtration plant.

Asked City Manager Bob Herbert for a recommendation on a request by St. John's Episcopal Church for exemption from real estate taxes on a subsidized apartment for mentally ill people.

Was told there were few complaints Monday about the city's new real estate assessments that were mailed to property owners this past weekend.

Was introduced to the William Fleming High basketball team that will be playing Saturday night in a doubleheader featuring two of the best prep teams in the country, Oak Hill in Southwest Virginia and Rice High in New York. Coach Burrall Paye said he hopes this will be the beginning of an annual tournament that will bring the best prep teams in the country to Roanoke.

Agreed to extend the lease on the old Jefferson High School gymnasium to the Roanoke Central YMCA.
