OBIT-LAYMAN, THELMA LUGAR
LAYMAN, Thelma Lugar, 91, of New Castle, died Sunday, January 31, 1993, at
Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn. She was the daughter of the
late L. L. and Martha Trout Lugar. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Matthew E. Layman, in 1964; a son, C. W. Layman, who was lost in the Pacific
during World War II; and a brother, Frank Lugar. Mrs. Layman was a native of
Craig County where she resided until June 1989 when, because of her health,
she moved to Damascus to live with her son. She was a 1924 graduate of the
Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy, and she and her husband owned
and operated Layman's Pharmacy in New Castle for over four decades. Mrs.
Layman was a life-long member of the Christian Church, and taught a Sunday
school class in the New Castle Christian Church for 40 years. She was also a
charter member of the New Castle Garden Club and Mountain Chapter No. 168
Order of the Eastern Star. She also belonged to the Craig Chapter of United
Daughters of the Confederacy. Survivors include her devoted son and
daughter-in-law, Robert G. and Dorothy Webb Layman, Damascus; one grandson,
Rickey G. Layman, Aston, Pa.; two granddaughters, Melinda L. Micklewright of
Kingsport, Tenn., Cynthia L. Hartsfield of Lexington, Ky.; six
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kate L. Webb of Blacksburg, Maude L.
Humphreys of New Castle; and a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of
friends. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1993,
at New Castle Christian Church with Dr. Ernie Johnson and Mr. James T. Bayne
officiating. Burial will follow in Ross Cemetery, Craig County. The family
will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
