WIN OVER BULLDOGS MAKES LANCERS 15-0

The state's No. 1 Group AA boys' basketball team jumped a major hurdle Tuesday night.

Laurel Park, the only unbeaten team left in Timesland, passed a difficult test against eighth-ranked Martinsville, defeating the hosts Bulldogs 72-64 and taking a commanding lead in the Piedmont District's regular-season chase.

The loss dropped Martinsville (12-3 overall, 10-3 district) into a tie with Magna Vista for second place in the Piedmont, three games behind Laurel Park.

Carlos Cooke's 23 points led four Lancers in double figures. Ronnie Jackson added 19, Lonzie Robertson 14 and Chauncey Strange 10 for Laurel Park (15-0, 13-0).

The Lancers took care of business quickly, taking a 44-30 halftime lead. Martinsville fell victim in the first half to the Lancers' pressing defense, which created numerous Bulldogs turnovers that resulted into easy transition baskets for Laurel Park.

Playing much better after halftime, the Bulldogs outscored the visitors 21-14 in the third quarter. Martinsville drew to 64-60 with two minutes left but got no closer.

Martinsville, which lost 76-71 at Laurel Park in the clubs' first meeting, was led by Vincent Eggleston's 23 points. Todd Johnson added 16 - including four 3-pointers - and Mike Martin 14 for the Bulldogs. \

Chatham 65

CHATHAM - Tony Holmes fired in 30 points - 24 in the first half - to lead the Warriors to a Piedmont District victory.

Magna Vista (11-4, 10-3) was 17-of-19 on free throws; Chatham made eight of 18.

Marcus Toney added 12 points and Evan Penn had 10 for the Warriors.

Chatham (5-10, 5-8) got 16 points from LaVelton Pope, 15 from Theo Jones, 12 from Tim White and 11 from Ben Wright. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 89

Dan River 59 COLLINSVILLE - Forward Lemuel Jones broke loose

for a season-high 29 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Cavaliers past the Wildcats in the Piedmont District game.

Point guard Thad Wade contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Fieldale-Collinsville (11-4, 9-4), which raced to a 46-19 halftime lead.

Brian Gunn led Dan River (4-12, 3-10) with 22 points. \

James River 76

Covington 65

BUCHANAN - Troy Thompson and David Johnson scored 18 points each and the Knights made their free throws in the fourth quarter for a close Pioneer District win over the Cougars.

Romond Waldron added 16 points, Lloyd Moore had 12 and Jody Steger put in 10 for James River (5-10, 4-3). Steger had nine rebounds, and Thompson and Waldron had seven assists each.

The score was 30-30 at halftime, and James River led 54-50 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, James River sank nine of 10 free throws to pull away. The Knights were 14-for-16 on free throws in the game.

For Covington (6-7, 4-3), Van Wallace had a game-hight 28 points and Keeno Jones added 14. \

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues pulled away in the second half for their Pioneer District win over the visiting Chargers.

Parry McCluer (10-5, 5-3) were led by Nathan Baker's game-high 22 points.

Bath County (6-9, 2-4) got 10 apiece from Michael Edwards and Tyler McCune.

MARTINSVILLE - Adnan Javaid sank a 3-point goal with one second left to hand the Chiefs their first Virginia Independent Conference win.

Carlisle (2-17, 1-10) led 36-30 at halftime. Roanoke Catholic outscored the Chiefs 21-14 run in the third quarter to take a one-point lead, but Javaid's shot gave Carlisle the win.

Andrew Tunnell scored 24 points, including five three-pointers to lead the Chiefs.

Charles Cunningham led Catholic (4-19, 2-8) with 16 points, but left in the third quarter with an ankle injury. \

Floyd County 80

Narrows 59

FLOYD - Twelve of the 15 Floyd County players who dressed scored as the Buffaloes overwhelmed the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game.

Jason Light's 18 points paced Floyd County (10-3, 10-3), which led 38-13 at halftime and was never challenged.

Patrick Bailey led Narrows (5-9, 4-8) with 18 points. \

CHILHOWIE - The Warriors, trailing by two points entering the final quarter, outscored the visiting Blue Devils 24-10 on the final eight minutes for a Hogoheegee District victory. Chilhowie (10-5, 6-4) had four double-figure scorers, led by Tim Polk's 17 points and Shane Olinger's 16. O.J. Williams' 24 points paced Castlewood (6-8, 5-5).

WYTHEVILLE - Michael Cook stole the ball and Jeff Bourne scored on a layup with four seconds left as the Maroons knocked off the Panthers in Hogoheegee District play. John Griffin had 20 points for Northwood (12-5, 8-3), which missed its shot at the buzzer. George Wythe (9-7, 6-3) was paced by Mike Cook's 17. \

RURAL RETREAT - The Cavaliers made eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game. Holston (2-13, 1-10) outscored Rural Retreat 40-29 in the first and fourth quarters. Stephen Pratt had 27 points for Rural Retreat (2-12, 2-8) in a losing effort. \
