OPENLY GAY WOMAN GIVEN HOUSING POST
President Clinton named a lesbian San Francisco official to a key federal housing post Tuesday, making good on a campaign pledge to avoid discrimination against homosexuals in his administration.Roberta Achtenberg, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, would be the highest-ranking openly gay official in the history of the executive branch, if confirmed as an assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity in the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Also Tuesday, Clinton named Andrew Cuomo, son of New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, assistant secretary for community planning and development.
