PULASKI WRECK KILLS WOMAN, GREAT-GRANDSON

A 70-year-old Pulaski woman and her great-grandson were killed in a single car accident in Pulaski Monday afternoon.

A second great-grandson, who was 8 months old, was injured and was flown to a Roanoke hospital.

The car was driven by Cora Quackenbush of Pulaski, said Lt. J.T. Back of the Pulaski Police Department. He added that the car was not equipped with child safety seats, and he did not know if any of the occupants had been wearing seat belts.

She was driving west on 1st Street Southwest when her car crossed into the opposite lane, struck a power pole, veered back across the street and went off a 50-foot embankment about 5:40 p.m., Back said. It overturned and came to rest on its top.

Quackenbush was pronounced dead at the scene. Four-year-old Christopher Melton, also of Pulaski, died at Pulaski Community Hospital.

His brother, Samuel Melton, was flown to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley by the Lifeguard 10 helicopter. The hospital would not disclose his condition Tuesday, but he was in a regular room.
