EAGLES SHOOT DOWN KNIGHTS IN RVD GAME
In a Roanoke Valley District game that featured 18 goals from 3-point distance, free throws made the difference.Franklin County clinched a 79-76 boys' basketball victory over host Cave Spring on Tuesday night by making three free throws in the final 20 seconds.
Jamie Stockton made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give Franklin County (9-5 overall, 3-2 RVD) a 78-76 lead. After Cave Spring missed a shot, the Eagles' Derek Bryant made another free throw to finish the scoring.
The Knights (5-12, 0-5) scored 10 3-pointers, but Bryant had seven 3-point goals for Franklin County, including four in a 23-point third quarter. Bryant's 24 points tied Cave Spring's Matt Matheny for game-high scoring honors.
Carlos Holland scored 17 points for the Eagles.
Dusty Beekman and Robbie Hibbs added 18 apiece for Cave Spring. \

SHAWSVILLE - The Pioneers had five scorers in double-digits as they romped over the Shawnees for a Mountain Empire District win. Matt Chumbley led Fort Chiswell (9-5, 7-5) with 15 points, B.W. Hill scored 14, Steve Widner added 11 and Brian McHone and Jody Burnett had 10 apiece. Keith Martin scored 21 points and Andy Smith added 14 to lead Shawsville (2-13, 1-11).

BLAND - Jeff Spells scored 28 points as the Maroon Tide rolled over the visiting Rockets for a Mountain Empire District win. Galax (10-3, 9-2) led by five at halftime but increased its lead by outscoring Bland 11-5 in the third quarter and 19-12 in the fourth quarter. Monty Matthews led Bland (9-6, 7-6) with 19. \

ROCKY GAP - Andy Johnson scored 16 points to lead Auburn's Eagles to a Mountain Empire District victory. Terry Millirons added 10 for Auburn (10-5, 8-4). Eric Faulkner led Rocky Gap's Eagles (0-13, 0-12) with 18 points.

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils (11-3, 10-1) blew open a close Mountain Empire District game by scoring the first 12 points of the third quarter. The spurt gave Grayson County a 36-16 lead that was never threatened. Mitch Hawks' 20 points led Grayson County, which shot 63 percent in the second half and 51 percent for the game. Giles (5-9, 4-8) got 12 points from Patrick Steele and 10 each from Marty Smith and Mitch Reed. \

BUCKINGHAM - Lewis Jones and Franklin James combined for 49 points, spearheading the Knights' Seminole District upset of the Golden Eagles. After trailing 36-32 at halftime, Buckingham scored 53 second-half points to record its third win in 15 games (overall and district). Jones and James finished with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Geoff Zimmerman had 15 points and Mike Williams added 13 for Staunton River (7-8, 7-8), which hit eight 3-pointers.

BEDFORD - A late flurry by Liberty gave the Minutemen a Seminole District victory over the Cavaliers.
Liberty (7-9, 7-9) saw its eight-point first-quarter lead dissolve into a tie going into the fourth quarter. Liberty got Jerry Padgett's layup to break a 65-65 tie with about two minutes left. Then Padgett got a steal and hit two free throws with about 1:30 left for a 69-65 Liberty lead.
Jefferson Forest (9-6, 9-6) closed to 69-67, but Bruce Jacobs and Cory Anderson each hit two free throws for Liberty. Craig Coleman's 16 points, Padgett's 12 and Greg Reynolds' 12 led Liberty, which made 25 of 35 free throws.
For Jefferson Forest, Bryan Jennings had 16, Ryan Gilleland 15 and Anthony Poindexter 13. The Cavaliers hit 11 of 14 free throws. \

RADFORD - Chris Hairston had 18 points and 11 rebounds, pacing the Bobcats past the Scarlet Hurricane in a non-district game. Garrett Jones added 17 points for Radford (6-9), which sealed the win by making 11 of 16 free throws compared with Marion's 4-for-9 shooting. Marion (7-9), which last led 37-36 early in the third quarter, was led by Brian Criggler and Daniel Hall, who each had 13 points. \

BLUEFIELD - Graham hung on for a non-district victory, helped by a late miss by the visiting Cavaliers and an intentional foul call that kept the ball in the G-Men's possession. Graham (7-9) led by 10 points during the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers (5-12) rallied before coming up short. Carroll was led by John Wolford's 19 points. Jay Gray's 27 points paced Graham. \

NEW CASTLE - An outside-the-arc shooting display ended with Craig County gaining a non-district victory.
Craig County and Covington Boys' Home combined for 24 3-pointers, but the Rockets' range was better. Led by Kevin Lucas, who scored all of his 21 points on 3-pointers, and Robby Huffman, who had a team season-high eight 3-pointers in his 27 points, Craig County went 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) from long range. The Rockets were 20-for-38 on two-point shots.
Craig (8-7) needed a late rally, however, to win. A 13-point first-half lead was down to one at the start of the fourth quarter, and Covington (9-7) took a 65-64 lead early in the period. But a full-court press helped Craig overtake Covington.
Chris Peters had eight of his 10 points and Tommy Fisher six of his 17 in the fourth quarter.
Huffman had 12 rebounds and Peters 14 assists. Jeff Ford had 10 points.
Donnie Costigan's seven 3-pointers helped him lead all scorers with 34 points for Covington Boys' Home. George Wood added 21 and Patrick Hall 11.

BLACKSBURG - Chris Foster's 13 points led four Pulaski County players in double figures as the Cougars defeated the Indians in a non-district game. Pulaski County (12-4) took advantage of 14 first-half turnovers by Blacksburg (5-10) to take a 25-15 lead at halftime. Eric Webb and Tyrone Hash had 11 points each for Pulaski County, and Montie Brown contributed 10. Craig Turman and Jay Safford had 17 points apiece for Blacksburg. \

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Bulldogs outscored Christiansburg 29-12 in the middle two quarters to earn a non-district victory. Christiansburg (1-15) was led by Tony Bishop with 11 points. \
