TOWN GETTING HELP FROM PAIR OF COLLEGE PROJECTS

Students from two higher educational institutions are providing some help to the town of Pulaski these days.

J.R. Schrader, chairman of the town's Personnel Committee, told Town Council on Tuesday that a class at Radford University has undertaken a project to write job descriptions for all town employees after interviewing them about their jobs.

Schrader said the class would give the results to the town.

Acting Town Manager Rob Lyons reported that two Wytheville Community College civil engineering students are surveying town rights of way as part of an engineering internship project.

Some undeveloped rights of way could present maintenance problems, Lyons said, and council can consider whether to abandon them once the student reports are in.

The reports will describe the physical conditions, tell whether utilities are present, search town records for previous council actions, list adjacent property owners and recommend what rights of way could be closed.

There is no cost to the town for either project.

In another matter, water users in Pulaski have an extra $1.50 on their bills this month, which is being assessed by the Virginia Department of Health.

The state is assessing all waterworks operations in Virginia $1.50 per year for each water service connection. Pulaski chose to add the amount to one monthly bill rather than divide it up for a year.

All the money goes to the state for use in helping localities comply with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.
