COLONELS ROUT HALIFAX
William Fleming got even with Halifax County on Tuesday night.Carlos Rhodes scored 29 points as the Colonels defeated the Comets 72-59 in non-district boys' basketball, avenging an earlier loss to Halifax. Fleming, ranked eighth in The Associated Press' Group AAA high school poll, ran past the Comets 21-9 in the first quarter. The teams were almost even in scoring through the final three quarters, but Halifax County (8-4) couldn't overcome the lead.
Jermare Crump paced the Colonels (12-3) with 17 points. Philip Lacy added 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Derrick Hines had nine assists. Terrence Jennings led the Comets with 21.\ Northside 95, Rockbridge County 81: At Lexington, each of the starting Vikings scored in double-digits as the sixth-ranked Group AA team rolled past the Wildcats for a Blue Ridge District win. Rockbridge County (8-8, 1-4) cut a 46-34 halftime lead to six with six minutes to go. The Vikings (14-2, 4-1) sank several free throws in the final minutes to hold on. Walt Derey led Northside with 27 points and 14 rebounds, and Jimmy Porter scored 21 points. \ Salem 61, Lord Botetourt 56: At Daleville, the Spartans rallied in the last 1 1/2 minutes to take a Blue Ridge District victory over the Cavaliers.
Lord Botetourt (4-10, 0-5) led by six at the end of three quarters but scored only six points in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers led 56-55 with 1:34 left when Nathan Routt, who had 17 points, scored to put Salem (10-3, 3-2) ahead.
The Cavaliers called time out to set up a play but threw away the inbounds pass. Salem missed, and Lord Botetourt again called time out - and again threw away the inbounds pass. Shannon Williams led all scorers with 22 points for Lord Botetourt.\ Glenvar 90, Highland County 38: Brad Melton had 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Highlanders cruised past the visiting Rams in Pioneer District play. David Robinson added 18 for Glenvar (11-4, 7-0). Highland (2-11, 0-7) committed 28 turnovers.\ North Cross 86, Roanoke Valley Christian 72: Mike Bryan scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as the host Raiders dropped the Eagles for a VIC win. North Cross, third in the state private school rankings, took a 27-16 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Monty Smith paced the Raiders (16-5, 9-1) with 19 points, and Marcus Cardwell added 16 and scored his 1,000th point. Joe Surkamer led Roanoke Valley Christian (4-9, 3-7) with 15 points.\ Roanoke Valley Christian 41, North Cross 37: Brandi Surkamer, who had 17 points, hit four of four free throws down the stretch and Tiffany Hogan hit a jumper from the lane with 15 seconds to go in icing the host Eagles' Blue Ridge Conference victory. The Raiders (3-10, 2-8), who got a game-high 18 points from Emily Cook, led until last couple minutes. Roanoke Valley Christian (9-8, 8-2) got 10 points from Stephanie Webb.\ William Fleming 60, Halifax County 32: At South Boston, Marqueetta Randolph scored 29 points as the Colonels romped over the Comets for a non-district win. Fleming (9-5) led 38-20 at halftime and never looked back. Tonya Martin scored 15 and Rhonda Glass added 11 to lead Halifax County (1-11).
Monday's games
Hargrave Military 75, North Cross 55: At Chatham, Ivus Norville and Rod Cobb scored 27 points each as Hargrave (13-1, 9-0) remained unbeaten in the VIC by beating the third-ranked Raiders. Hargrave was ranked seventh in Monday's state private school coaches' poll with 79 points. With 103 points, North Cross (15-5, 8-1) was third behind Flint Hill and Norfolk Academy.\ Roanoke Catholic 52, Hargrave Military 10: At Catholic, Abby Dickson had 12 points and nine rebounds in leading the Celtics past the Tigers in a non-conference girls' game. Catholic (14-3) got 18 points from its bench and all but one Celtic scored. Hargrave (2-9) had only three players score.
