1 KILLED, 3 HURT WHEN HOUSE BURNS IN FRANKLIN COUNTY

A house fire in the Fork Mountain section of Franklin County early Tuesday killed one man and sent three other people to the hospital, Capt. Bill Overton of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department said.

The fire at the one-story house killed Ronald David Godfrey, 39, and injured another house resident, Lisa Sells Patton, 28.

Patton was in stable condition Tuesday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Two other men who were at the house when the 2 a.m. fire broke out were flown to the burn unit at University of Virginia. Michael Lynn King, 39, was in critical condition and James R. Flippen Jr., 31, was in stable condition.

Overton said Flippen was able to get out of the burning house and call for help. Rescue workers had to pull the other three people from the house, he said.

The fire apparently started in the living room, Overton said, possibly by someone smoking a cigarette.
