STATE SETS EMBARGO ON SHIPPED POULTRY
The state veterinarian on Tuesday announced a limited embargo on shipments of live poultry between Virginia and three states where avian flu has been detected in flocks.Dr. William Sims said the ban, which will last three months, affects live birds shown or sold at exhibitions and markets.
Sims also urged poultry companies to limit all truck traffic between Virginia and the three affected states - Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
Avian flu, which cannot be transmitted to humans, is a contagious respiratory disease. It can be transported by fecal matter from farm to farm on footwear, machinery and equipment.
Sims asked poultry companies to be careful when cleaning and disinfecting vehicles traveling to the affected states before returning.
The Virginia Poultry Federation on Monday urged farmers to take steps to prevent the spread of avian flu.
Federal officials last week banned auctions of birds to combat the disease. The auctions are used by private growers who raise chickens as a hobby or for food.
