CLINTON LEADING DOWN WRONG PATH

I EXPECTED some changes in policy when President Clinton took office, but not quite as fast. I'm afraid his conception of himself as the "popular man" of the times overrides his judgment and higher instincts, to say the least.

I am a decided follower of the pro-life segment, and his freeing up of the abortion clinics, et al., is distressing in the extreme. It is part of our viewpoint that abortion is murder, just as much as if a mother took her newborn infant directly after birth and smothered it. Just because it is out of sight doesn't reduce the outrage to life and the Master who designs it all.

In trying to be the "man of the '90s," I am afraid our new president will speed up the deterioration of our society in no small measure. Some long-held values are being disregarded and removed from the public mind. I think, also, of the result of all this in increasing violence in the schools, acceptance of promiscuous sex and making anything "religious" suspect.

I can only hope that the higher elements of our nation will take warning and become more articulate, instead of just standing by and watching our American way of life go down the drain where every society that has taken on these attitudes has gone.

Though I will attempt to stay loyal to our president as long as I can, I deeply deplore this direction he seems to be taking, persuasive as he is. ELLEN P. STEVENSON CHILHOWIE
