THE NRA HAS IT (PARTLY) RIGHT
I COMMEND the National Rifle Association on the positive recommendations made public in its recent advertisement. For those who missed them, I include them here:
Require absolute and positive proof of Virginia residency to get a Virginia driver's license.
Make state law enforcement a part of the team.
Put real teeth in the criminal penalties for fraudulent driver's licenses and "straw purchases." Then enforce that law without exception.
A fourth recommendation would contribute to the implementation of these three: A waiting period of at least one week before a gun purchase is completed. This would provide some time to verify the proof required in No. 1.
These recommendations, combined with the passage of the one-gun-per-month proposal, would assist in reducing the number of crimes committed with handguns purchased in Virginia. WALTER B. BARGER BUCHANAN
