USAIR, BA REQUEST SHARE-CODING RIGHTS
Philadelphia is one of the first places USAir plans to implement its "seamless" service agreement with British Airways on flights between U.S. cities and BA's network in Europe, Asia and Africa, the airlines said Wednesday.USAir said it had asked the Department of Transportation for permission to "code share" with British Air certain flights between Philadelphia and three cities - Cleveland; Syracuse, N.Y.; and Rochester, N.Y. - starting May 1.
Under code-sharing, USAir flights from those cities would be called BA flights on tickets issued to passengers connecting in Philadelphia to BA's London service.
Code-sharing - or operating under only one BA flight number - would offer advantages to both the airlines and to passengers, USAir officials said.
The practice, which is common in the airline industry, gives code-shared flights greater prominence in travel agents' computer-reservations systems, which helps the airlines sell more tickets. It also would reduce layover time, USAir said.
BA and USAir agreed to code-sharing on Jan. 21, when BA bought 19.9 percent of USAir's voting stock for $300 million. - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
