HENSLEY OUT OF JOB FOR DAYTONA 500
Despite two winter tests at Daytona International Speedway, 1992 rookie of the year Jimmy Hensley confirmed Wednesday that he has been dumped by car owner Cale Yarborough on the eve of Speedweeks."We are through," Hensley said from his Ridgeway, Va., home. "Cale just called me this past weekend and said he and Derrike [Cope] were trying to work up something."
It's a NASCAR variation of the trickle-down theory. Cope, the 1990 Daytona 500 winner, lost his ride on Jan. 26 when car owner Bob Whitcomb dissolved his team. But Hensley apparently is the ultimate victim.
"Tough business," he said.
Hensley has had his Daytona plane tickets for two months, so he's leaving for Daytona today as scheduled, except he has no Winston Cup ride and no Grand National ride.
"I'm going to talk to some people in Florida and maybe something will come up for later in the year," he said.
As for a ride at Daytona, anything is possible, but most of the cars are already committed.
"Six days before Speedweeks - that's kind of short notice to put something together," Hensley said. "But I've gotta go, even though I don't have anything."
