MENTALLY DISABLED PAIR LOSE PARENTAL RIGHTS
A mentally disabled couple must give up parental rights to their 2-year-old son, a divided Iowa Court of Appeals panel has ruled. In ending the couple's parental rights, two of the three judges said Tuesday that the boy was at risk because the parents "can barely attend to their own needs."
The boy suffered severe brain damage and other medical problems at birth and has been in foster care since then. Caring for him would require "an almost superhuman effort" the parents can't make, the majority judges decided.
