MAID BESS EXECUTIVE TO HEAD UNITED WAY BOARD

Glenn Thornhill, president of Maid Bess Corp., has been named chairman of the board of United Way of Roanoke Valley.

Thornhill, who succeeds James Arend of Atlantic Mutual Cos., was elected at United Way's recent annual meeting and campaign recognition luncheon.

Thornhill has been a member of the board since 1989. He was the first chairman of the Presidents Circle, United Way's leadership giving society of individuals and families contributing $1,0OO or more. He also established the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

William Hawkins, United Way board member and former chairman of the board and fund distribution chairman, received the F. Wiley Hubbell award for outstanding volunteer service to United Way. Hawkins has held all three top volunteer posts within the organization.

Arend presented awards to the 1992 United Way division and committee chairmen and retiring board members.

Joseph H. Vipperman of Appalachian Power Co. was elected 1993 campaign chairman.

Division chairmen elected for 1993 are: David R. Sangston, administration; Sue W. Robertson, community problem solving; Larry T. Rasche, marketing and communications; and J. Rudy Austin, planning.

John B. Williamson III was elected treasurer, and Angelica D. Lloyd was named vice chairman of the board.

Elected to the board in addition to Vipperman were Robert W. Glenn Jr., Deanna Gordon, David M. Gring, James W. Harkness, J. Hayden Hollingsworth, Robert G. Lee, Gerald Meadows, Delvis O. "Mac" McCadden, Jess Newbern III, John M. Presley, Larry T. Rasche, David R. Sangston, Randolph M. Smith and Onzlee Ware.

Winners were announced in United Way's ninth annual Corporate Employee Communication Contest, which recognizes outstanding efforts to inform employees about United Way. The winners were:

Employee publications: Roanoke Memorial Hospitals for articles about United Way published in its employee newsletter.

Special events: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia for its campaign kickoff in Elmwood Park featuring the "Star City Squares," a takeoff on the television game show "Hollywood Squares."

Audiovisual programs: Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Roanoke Locomotive Shops for a video featuring the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley.

Campaign communications: A tie between Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. and Roanoke Memorial Hospitals. Shenandoah Life was recognized for its total campaign, which featured a kickoff luncheon and skit, and creative fliers. Roanoke Memorial was honored for its grass-roots campaign, which included a 12-hour agency fair, articles in its employee publication and an employee recognition event.

Year-round communications: Atlantic Mutual Cos. received an honorable mention for organizing a team of five employees to deliver Meals on Wheels one day a week throughout the year for the League of Older Americans.
