3 VALLEY UNBEATEN WRESTLERS GET SET FOR TOURNAMENTS
Six Roanoke Valley high school wrestlers remain unbeaten as their teams prepare for Group A and Group AA district tournaments. The Group A Pioneer District tourney starts at Glenvar High School on Friday at 5 p.m. The Group AA Blue Ridge tourney will be held at William Byrd High School on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Three of the unbeaten wrestlers will see action in those tournaments. They are: Glenvar's Brandon Semones (189), James Rivers' Tony Bocanegra (103) and Lord Botetourt's Dan Sell (130). William Fleming seniors Keno Shepherd and Edward Jones and North Cross senior Aaron Lange are the others undefeated.
Sell has been a somewhat overlooked wrestler during his four-year varsity career. "Dan is so smooth and dedicated that a lot of people take him for granted," said Botetourt coach Mark Agner. "But let me tell you, he is some wrestler, and he has a lot of talent. He just doesn't like to get beat."
Sell has wrestled in four different weight classes while at Botetourt. His only two losses last year came in the state tourney.
He calls himself a defensive wrestler, one who waits for his move then takes advantage of any opportunity his opponents might give him. "I don't think I give my opponent many chances to score on me," Sell said.
"I like to think that I use my head while I am wrestling. But I do wish I were better on my feet. I like to think I make up for my lack of strength with my skills and patience."
