THIS BUDGET IDEA TAKES THE CAKE

Bake sales and benefit dinners could help ease budget woes in Albemarle County, a Board of Supervisors member has suggested.

Faced with increasing demands for services and a shrinking budget, the county says creative fund raising may be the wave of the future.

The issue was raised by Supervisor Charles S. Martin at the board's Wednesday meeting when it became apparent that money to fund several road projects would not be available for many years.

"Why don't we look into fund-raisers for the county to help government pay for services?" Martin asked.

Several supervisors said it was worth considering.

After the meeting, Martin said he had in mind carnivals, concerts or $100-a-plate dinners sponsored by private organizations but endorsed by the county as ways to pay for specific projects. Those could include new buses, sidewalks and road improvements, he said.

"What's wrong with a $100-a-plate dinner that the board would endorse and let people know this is for a bus?" Martin asked.
