CLINTON PLANS TO NOMINATE FEDERAL JUDGE
President Clinton plans to nominate Manhattan federal judge Kimba M. Wood to serve as attorney general, administration officials said Thursday. The officials said Clinton was awaiting results of an FBI criminal records check before making the announcement.
Clinton had also considered former Virginia Gov. Gerald Baliles and Washington lawyer Charles F.C. Ruff.
Wood, 49, a graduate of Connecticut College and Harvard Law School, is a Democrat. She was named to the federal bench by President Reagan in 1988. She was an antitrust and commercial litigation attorney at a New York law firm before becoming a judge.
Clinton and his wife, Hillary, interviewed Wood last week. Both were described as impressed with her.
Her selection allows him to remain true to his goal of naming a woman to one of what have been described by National Women's Political Caucus President Harriett Woods as the four "power positions" - State, Defense, Treasury and Justice.
Wood is best known for her sentencing of junk-bond financier Michael Milken to 10 years in prison - a sentence she later trimmed to two years actually served in recognition of Milken's cooperation with federal prosecutors.
