RADFORD'S DAY BREAKS 3-POINT RECORD IN LOSS

Radford University's Doug Day eclipsed the NCAA record for career 3-pointers, but Campbell University made better use of the long shots Thursday night and ended with an 89-84 Big South Conference basketball victory.

The Camels (8-10 overall, 6-2 Big South) sank 10 of 12 free throws in the last 1:28 to hold off a late rally attempt and beat Radford (10-12, 4-5) for the second time this year. The loss ended the Highlanders' 16-game winning streak at the Dedmon Center.

Campbell had a school-record 12 3-pointers (in 29 attempts) in beating Radford for only the second time in the teams' past eight meetings.

"They were making uncontested shots and getting every loose ball," Radford guard Brian Schmall said. "They just wanted it more than we did. Most of it was poor defense on our part."

Day finished with 15 points and four 3-pointers, giving him 366 3-pointers for his career, surpassing Jeff Fryer of Loyola Marymount, who made 363.

Day nailed his first shot from beyond the arc with 16:12 left to tie the record, and he sank his second with 12 minutes left in the first half to break it. After making two more, going 4-for-6 from long range for the first half, Day did not make another. He had three second-half points and did not score in the last 17:16. He went 1-for-7 from the floor in the second half.

"In the first half, we were mesmerized by which screen Doug was coming off of," Campbell coach Billy Lee said. "In the second half, we didn't make any real changes, but we asked Scott Neely and Steve Martin to focus on just Day."

Said Day: "I just tried to play the game and let it happen. I've accomplished a goal and there's a lot of pressure off my shoulders, but I much rather would have had the victory. That would have been much sweeter."

Starting with Tyrone Travis' two free throws at the 8:30 mark of the first half, Radford scored on six straight possessions to outscore the Camels 13-3 and go up 34-24. Typical of Radford this year, though, the Highlanders couldn't keep it going.

Travis, who scored six of the points in the charge, then drew a foul and a subsequent technical at 4:39. Billy Ellison made both free throws from the foul, and Mark Mocnik added two more for the technical. Campbell wrapped up the six-point package with an Ellison layin after a scramble.

Campbell scored on five of its last trips down the floor to close to 41-39 at halftime.

"Last year, I used to talk about the mental toughness of this team," Radford coach Ron Bradley said. "But for whatever reason, we're a fragile team this year and we don't handle any type of adversity during the game."

Mocnik led Campbell with 22 points, and Wytheville's Jamie Lee, who scored 10, was one of six Camels in double figures. Mocnik, Steve Martin and Scott Neely had a trio of 3-pointers each for Campbell, and Lee added two more.

Schmall had 20 points and a school-record 15 assists for Radford. Don Burgess added 16 I just tried to play the game and let it happen. I've accomplished a goal and there's a lot of pressure off my shoulders, but I much rather would have had the victory. Doug Day Radford guard after breaking the NCAA record for career 3-pointers points and six rebounds, and Travis chipped in 15 points.

Radford made 60 percent of its shots for the game and outrebounded Campbell 29-27. Radford was outscored 36-27 on 3-pointers and 21-9 on free throws.
