5 TO 10 ACRES BURN ON MILL MOUNTAIN
A brush fire burned 5 to 10 acres Thursday afternoon on the west side of Mill Mountain.About 40 firefighters worked four hours to extinguish the blaze, which apparently was started by two teen-age boys playing with matches, Crystal Spring Fire Capt. H.L. Kelley said.
At one point the fire came within 100 yards of a home on Robinhood Road, but Kelley said the house was not in danger because winds were light and firefighters were able to quickly control the flames.
The fire, which began shortly before 5 p.m., caused little significant damage; it burned mainly leaves, brush and tree stumps, Kelley said. The blaze was about a half-mile from the Mill Mountain Zoo.
No injuries were reported and Kelley said charges against the boys were unlikely.
