QUEST FOR WRESTLING TITLES BEGINS

Timesland wrestling teams start on their quest for state championships this weekend with district meets in Group AA and A.

The Group AAA Northwestern Region dual tournament also will be held Saturday at Stonewall Jackson in Manassas. Franklin County and host Stonewall Jackson are the favorites, and the team that wins will play host to the Group AAA state meet tournament in March.

Franklin County has been beaten three consecutive years by Woodbridge in the region. Woodbridge, though, failed to qualify this year. The other Roanoke Valley District entry is William Fleming.

In first-round action, Fleming takes on Stonewall Jackson at noon. Semifinals are scheduled at 4, with the final at 6.

All district tournaments are scheduled Saturday except for the New River, which will be held today at Carroll County.

Other district tournament sites: Blue Ridge (William Byrd), Seminole (Brookville), Piedmont (Bassett), Mountain Empire (Grayson County), Pioneer (Glenvar) and Hogoheegee (Rural Retreat). Franklin County will play host to the Roanoke Valley District meet next weekend.
