BUY AMERICAN OR DON'T COMPLAIN
AFTER SPENDING years in the South Pacific, I and tens of thousands of Americans returned home. We had won the war! How naive we were. We won the battle, but Japan has won the war.President Clinton and Congress are contemplating raising taxes on Japanese imports to help build up our domestic auto market. I fully agree and think they should also increase import taxes on electronics, steel and even products made by our own American companies that have moved their operations to other countries and have taken American jobs with them.
Even if they do enact these tax bills, it will not do the whole job. The American public has the final say - we can buy American. I've never owned a foreign car, and at my age I am reasonably sure I won't live long enough to have to.
Or, you can jump into one of those "rice-burning roller skates" and while driving down the highway, be sure to gripe about our economy going down the sewer.
Happy motoring! EARL A. PONTING ROANOKE
