CLINTON IS NO JFK
I AM A FORMER resident of Vinton, and I returned to my home town recently for a visit with my family. I have been more than pleased to see how the Roanoke Valley has remained a beautiful and progressive area. However, if viewpoints like the one expressed by Frances Johnson (letter, Jan. 25) have become the prevalent mind-set of the area, I fear for its continued prosperity.I understand the similarities Ms. Johnson sees between President Kennedy and President Clinton, but I think it is quite obvious that most are only examples of skilled acting on Clinton's part. If Clinton is so eager to do what he can for our country, as Kennedy charged in his famous speech, then why wasn't he willing to serve America in the military?
I am also glad to hear that Ms. Johnson would be so willing to contribute to the lowering of the national debt through a personal contribution. Maybe she needs to be reminded that the working people of America, myself included, already contribute far too much in taxes to our government and its out-of-control spending. KATHY L.
