IN SERVICE

The United States Marine Corps next Saturday will mark the 50th anniversary of women enlisting in the Corps.

Their enlistment during World War II greatly increased the Marine Corps' capabilities to place 20,000 fighting men in the Pacific. the recruiting slogan, "Free a Man to Fight," brought thousands of women to the Corps' ranks.

The Women Marines Association, in conjunction with the Marine Corps World War II Commemorative Committee, will hold a luncheon at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington.

The guest of honor will be Brigadier Gen. Magaret A. Brewer, the Corps' first female general officer. A reception will be followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m.

Marine Lance Cpl. TIMOTHY K. TAYLOR, son of Debra L. and Charles N. Taylor Jr. of Elliston, the Basic Electronics Course at Twentynine Palms, Ca.

Airman 1st Class SCOTT D. SHAFFER, son of Jesse E. and Bobbie H. Shaffer of Dublin, the special vehicle mechanic course at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill.

Pvt. ROBERT D. RATCLIFFE, son of Robert D. and Patricia A. Ratcliffe, the aircraft powerplant repairer course at Fort Eustis, Newport News.

Marine Cpl. ROBERT B. CLARK, son of Charlie B. and Brenda G. Clark of Pulaski, the Automotive Organizational Maintenance Course at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Lance Cpl. JEFFREY S. MILES, son of Judy A. Ruth of Radford, has been named a distinguished graduate upon completion of the Basic Combat Engineer Course and was meritoriously promoted to his present rank.

Marine 2nd Lt. COURTNEY J. HOLLAR, son of Inell E. Hollar of Blacksburg, has recently graduated from The Basic School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class TROY H. DALTON, son of Janet P. and Troy H. Dalton Sr. of Radford, is in the Persian Gulf abroad the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. Prior to that, Dalton was off the coast of Somalia supporting the international relief effort Operation Restore Hope.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class DAVID W. LONG, son of Phyllis T. Long of Blacksburg, and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class JASON W. HALE, son of Brenda L. Hale of Willis, are in the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk.

Navy Lt. Commander, GARY D. PARKER, son of Marvin D. and Mildred Parker of Elliston, has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.

Completing basic training:

Pvt. TRAVIS L. MORRIS, nephew of Margaret R. McClanahan of Pulaski, at Fort Leonard E. Wood in Waynseville, Mo.

Pvt. DANIEL D. LEISURE, son of Machell B. Wells of Pulaski, at Fort Leonard E. Wood.
