LANDSLIDES SLOW RESCUE AFTER VOLCANO ERUPTION
Volcanic landslides sent rescue teams scrambling and forced a halt Friday to the search for bodies buried in debris disgorged by the Mayon volcano. The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council said 61 people died in Tuesday's eruption. Twenty-five were missing and 118 were injured, the council said.
The government rushed medicine, food and other supplies to this city 200 miles southeast of Manila after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology predicted a bigger eruption this weekend.
Mayon, the most active of the Philippines' 21 volcanos, exploded Tuesday for the first time in eight years.
