UVA WOMEN DROP GEORGIA TECH 88-53
Wendy Palmer scored 17 points Friday to lead five Cavaliers in double figures as No. 11 Virginia defeated Georgia Tech 88-53 in women's basketball.Virginia (15-5 overall, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) held Georgia Tech to 28 percent shooting overall. The Cavaliers led by 37 points with 45 seconds remaining.
Dena Evans scored 14 points for the Cavaliers, and Heather Burge had 12. Palmer led Virginia with eight rebounds and was 3-for-3 on free throws.
Joyce Pierce led Georgia Tech (10-8, 4-7) with 12 points and was 8-of-9 on free throws.
In other women's games:
\ Hollins 62, Randolph-Macon 53: At Hollins, Shaye Strager scored 18 points and collected 10 rebounds, leading Hollins past the Yellow Jackets (10-8, 8-4) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. Anne Allen Westbrook added 17 points and Serena Beedie 13 for Hollins (10-8, 6-7).
\ Guilford 80, Roanoke College 68: At Greensboro, N.C., Brenda Davis and Catherine Herring scored 25 points each to lead Guilford to the ODAC victory. Kay Caldwell scored 14 points, Dena Blank had 13 and Amy Saunders had 11 for the Maroons (14-4, 10-3), who committed 22 turnovers. Guilford (8-10, 5-9) never trailed. \
Men
Christopher Newport 101, Methodist 50: At Newport News, Va., Steve Artis scored 17 points as the Captains (17-3, 5-1) took its 20th consecutive victory over the Monarchs (2-16, 1-6) in a Dixie Conference game.
\ Bowie State 95, St. Paul's 78: At Lawrenceville, Kevin Purnell scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulldogs (7-15) defeated the Tigers (4-17) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game.
\ Greensboro 81, Newport News 74: At Newport News, Brad Apple scored 24 points to lead the Pride (13-6) over the Builders (2-19).
