BATH COUNTY SURPRISES GLENVAR 71-63

Bath County scored one of the bigger upsets in the Pioneer District boys' basketball season Friday night, knocking off first-place Glenvar 71-63.

The Chargers (7-9 overall, 3-4 Pioneer) prevented the Highlanders (12-5, 8-1) from clinching a tie for the regular-season district title.

Glenvar, ranked seventh among Group A teams in the state, never led. It was 40-35 at halftime, and Bath expanded the lead to 60-47 with 6:04 left. Glenvar got as close as 68-63 with 38 seconds left before Craig Phillips made one free throw and Mike Reese two.

Reese, a senior who plays the wing, had a career-high 20 points and five rebounds. He made eight of 11 field-goal attempts and all four of his free-throw tries.

Brad Melton had a game-high 21 points for Glenvar, followed by Jason Anderson with 18 and Wes Jones with 13. \

Lord Botetourt 59

Rockbridge County 54

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers held Rockbridge County to 33 percent shooting to register their first Blue Ridge District victory of the season.

Botetourt (6-10, 1-5) also dominated the rebounding 38-29. Jeff Cronise had 16 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Shannon Williams led the Botetourt offense with 11 points. Rockbridge County (8-9, 1-5) got 19 points from Marty Early. \

Craig County 53

NEW CASTLE - Jason Baker scored 14 points and Nathan Baker added 12 as the Fighting Blues rolled past the Rockets for a Pioneer District victory. Parry McCluer (11-5, 6-3) jumped out early and led 35-14 at halftime. Craig County mounted a comeback in the second half and closed to seven points, but the Fighting Blues stretched their lead again for the win. Kevin Lucas scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Craig County (8-8, 2-5). \

RV Christian 66

Roanoke Catholic 53

Aaron Hassell scored 14 points and Billy Fluker 10 to lead the Eagles (5-9, 4-7) past the Celtics (4-20, 2-9) in a Virginia Independent Conference game at Catholic's gym. RVC forced 16 Catholic turnovers. Mike Kolnok led the Celtics with a game-high 21 points. \

Celtics center Abby Dickson scored 10 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Roanoke Catholic (15-3, 9-2) to a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the visiting Eagles (8-3 conference). Dickson, a 6-foot sophomore, was the only scorer in double figures. Her 19 rebounds were one short of Roanoke Valley Christian's team total. \

Marqueetta Randolph had a game-high 18 points, and Felecia Manns had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Colonels (10-4, 4-4) in the Roanoke Valley District game. Deon Trussell led Fleming with six assists. Elisha Jones paced PH (1-15, 0-9) with 11 points. \
