CAVE SPRING GIRLS WHIP COUGARS

Cave Spring's defense held Pulaski County's leading scorer to one point and the Knights methodically defeated the Cougars 55-39 Friday in a game between the Roanoke Valley District's top two girls' basketball teams.

The Knights (16-2 overall, 8-0 RVD) expanded their lead over the Cougars (10-6, 6-2) to two games. The teams play for a third time Feb. 15. Cave Spring won the first meeting 63-37.

Cave Spring led 17-11 after one quarter when Sallie Cadwell scored off an offensive rebound and was fouled. She made the free throw to end the quarter.

It was 32-24, Cave Spring, at the half, but the Knights turned up their defensive pressure in the second half, holding Pulaski County to 15 points.

Jody Hallett, Pulaski's leading scorer with a 13-point average, was held to one against the Knights' post stalwarts, Amy Athey and Kelly Dierker. Second-leading scorer Carrie McConnell had nine.

Athey led Cave Spring with 16 points and Kim Stewart added 12. \

ROCKY MOUNT - Shannon Conley's basket with 10 seconds left in overtime lifted the Eagles past the Pioneers in a non-district game.

Franklin County (10-6) rallied from a 13-point deficit with two minutes left in regulation to force overtime. Patricia Campbell's layup with eight seconds left in regulation tied the game at 47.

Michelle Payne paced Heritage with 22 points. \

Boys

Grayson County 60

Auburn 58

Jamie Robinson made a pair of free throws to put Grayson County ahead and Dennis Roberts clinched the victory with a free throw with four seconds left in overtime.

Grayson County (12-3, 11-1) got a game-high 29 points from Mitch Hawks, who fired in six 3-point field goals.

Auburn (10-6, 8-5) was led by Andy Johnson with 18 points and Terry Millirons with 16. The Eagles outscored Grayson County 11-6 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. \

Christiansburg 51

Carroll County 50

CHRISTIANSBURG - John Hairston sank a field goal with 17 seconds left as the Demons slipped past the Cavaliers for their second win of the season.

Carroll County led 50-46 with 30 seconds left when Kevin McDowell of Christiansburg was fouled. He made one free throw, retrieved the rebound from his second shot and sank a 3-pointer to pull the Demons to within one. Hairston's shot gave Christiansburg (2-15, 1-3) the New River District win.

John Wofford scored 17 points to lead Carroll County (5-13, 1-2). \

Gateway Christian 96

Stanleytown Baptist 55

BLACKSBURG - Four Crusaders scored in double figures, led by David Aurthur's 19 points, as Gateway Christian romped to the non-district victory over Stanleytown Baptist.

Gateway Christian is 9-1. \

Fort Chiswell 78

NARROWS - B.W. Hill scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first two quarters as the Pioneers took a 13-point lead at the half and coasted to the Mountain Empire District victory over the Green Wave.

Fort Chiswell is 10-5, 8-5. Chad Fleeman had 16 points for the Green Wave (5-11, 4-10). \

Floyd County 51

Bland 35

BLAND - Mike Hylton scored 14 points and Landon Conner added 13 as the Buffaloes ran past the Rockets for a Mountain Empire District win.

Floyd County (11-4, 11-3) captured the victory by holding all Bland (9-7, 7-7) scorers to single digits and outscoring the Rockets 28-14 in the middle quarters. \

Parry McCluer 64

Craig County 53

NEW CASTLE - Jason Baker scored 14 points and Nathan Baker added 12 as the as the Fighting Blues rolled past the Rockets for a Pioneer District victory.

Parry McCluer (11-5, 6-3) jumped out early and led 35-14 at halftime. Craig County mounted a comeback in the second half and closed to seven points, but the Fighting Blues stretched their lead again for the win.

Kevin Lucas scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Craig County (8-8, 2-5). \

Giles 81

Shawsville 46

PEARISBURG - The young Shawnees put up a fight for a quarter, but in the end the Spartans' depth and experience prevailed for a Mountain Empire District victory.

Shawsville, down to six players, trailed 9-8 after a quarter, then Giles (6-9, 5-8) took command, leading 33-17 at halftime.

Rusty Newby's game-high 19 points led Giles, Patrick Steele added 13 and Marty Smith had 10.

For Shawsville (2-15, 1-3), Keith Martin had 18 points and Darrell Bibb put in 14. \

Galax 60

Rocky Gap 36

GALAX - Jeff Spells scored 19 points and the Maroon Tide (12-3, 11-2) dominated inside for the Mountain Empire District victory.

Galax rambled to a 29-12 first-half lead, and expanded it to 49-21 after three quarters.

Juan Garcia led Rocky Gap (1-14, 1-13) with 14 points. \

Staunton River 71

MONETA - Cornelius Fox scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles to the Seminole District triumph over the Generals.

Three other players - Roger Thomas, Eric Flood and Mike Moon - also scored in twin figures for the Golden Eagles (8-8, 8-8).

William Campbell is 1-14. \

Liberty 53

Brookville 51

LYNCHBURG - Bruce Jacobs scored 15 points as the Minutemen slipped past the Bees for a Seminole district win.

The teams were evenly matched through the games but free throws gave Brookville (10-6, 10-6) the Seminole district win. Liberty (8-9, 8-9) sank 20 of 28 shots from the line, while the Bees made only six of 17 free throws.

Jefferson Forest 73

ALTAVISTA - The Colonels dodged the Seminole District upset by hitting eight of 10 free throws in overtime to turn aside the stubborn Cavaliers.

Jefferson Forest (9-7, 9-7) led 22-4 after one quarter and 52-45 after three quarters before Altavista (14-2, 14-2) rallied to force overtime.

Sherman Pannell had 28 points and Mark Johnson 20 for Altavista. Ryan Gilleland led the Cavs with 25, while Thomas Sweeney added 16 and Bryan Jennings 14. \
