CHARGERS STUN GLENVAR IN 71-63 PIONEER UPSET
Bath County scored one of the bigger upsets in the Pioneer District boys' basketball season Friday night, knocking off first-place Glenvar 71-63.The Chargers (7-9 overall, 3-4 Pioneer) prevented the Highlanders (12-5, 8-1) from clinching a tie for the regular-season district championship.
Glenvar, ranked seventh among Group A teams in the state, never led. It was 40-35 at the half, and Bath expanded the lead to 60-47 with 6:04 left in the game. Glenvar got as close as 68-63 with 38 seconds left before Craig Phillips made one free throw and Mike Reese two to seal the win.
Reese, a senior who plays the wing, had a career-high 20 points and five rebounds. He made eight of 11 field-goal attempts and all four of his free-throw tries.
Craig Phillips added 17 points and Matt Sherrard 10 for Bath, which shot 47 percent from the floor.
Brad Melton had a game-high 21 points for Glenvar, followed by Jason Anderson with 18 and Wes Jones 13. \

CHATHAM - The Lancers, ranked No. 1 in the Group AA state poll and Timesland's only remaining unbeaten, rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to squash a Piedmont District upset bid by the Cavaliers.
Lonzy Robertson's 10-foot jumper with 14 seconds left gave Laurel Park (16-0, 14-0) the lead for good at 59-58. After a Chatham turnover, Chauncey Strange's two free throws put the Lancers up by three with five seconds left. Bobby Greene's desperation 3-pointer from midcourt rimmed out at the buzzer, ending the Cavs' upset hopes.
Chatham (5-11, 5-9) led 45-38 after three quarters. Laurel Park got back in the game by forcing numerous turnovers off its half-court trapping defense.
Ronnie Jackson led the winners with 15 points. Carlos Cooke added 12 and Robertson finished with 11.
Rodney Williams paced Chatham with 25 points.
It was the closest Laurel Park had come to defeat this season. The Lancers won the previous meeting of the teams 84-64. \

STUART - The Bulldogs jumped to a 32-16 halftime lead and breezed to the Piedmont District victory over the Cougars.
Maurice Spencer scored 17 points to pace Martinsville (13-3, 11-3). Patrick County (4-12, 2-12) got 24 points from Chris Reynolds. \

MARTINSVILLE - Five Warriors scored in double digits as Magna Vista romped over the Bengals in a Piedmont District game.
Tony Holmes, Rodney Redd and Evan Penn scored 16 points each, while Marcus Toney and Rodney Tanks had 14 apiece for the Warriors (12-4, 11-3).
Art Wade scored 15 and Darrel Hand added 13 to lead Bassett (3-13, 3-11).

RINGGOLD - The Hawks outscored the Wildcats 24-15 in the third quarter and put the Piedmont District game out of reach for Dan River.
Dan River (4-13, 3-11), which led by seven points in the second quarter and by one at halftime, was led by Rod Davis with 16 points and Brian Gunn with 15.
Gretna (3-13, 3-11) was paced by Corey Boone with 24 points and Rodney Irvin with 20. William Merritt, who finished with 11 points, sparked the Hawks' hot scoring in the third quarter with two 3-pointers. Randy Stone added 10 points. \

JONESVILLE - The teams spent a lot of time standing around - around the free-throw line - before the Scarlet Hurricane (8-9, 3-4) took the Highlands District victory over the host Generals (2-12, 1-6).
Between them, the teams shot 74 free throws; Lee hit 27 of 39 and Marion sank 25 of 35. Marion led 19-8 after the first quarter, but the teams played almost even through the last three.
Jimmie Morris had 20 points for Marion, and Travis Archer had 14.
For Lee, Jodi Mullins had 14 points. \

D.J. Preston scored 17 points and Andy Blevins and Shane Ollinger added 14 each as the Warriors flew past the Rebels for a Hogoheegee District victory.
Chilhowie (11-5, 7-4) led 36-20 at halftime and never looked back.
Steven White scored 15 points to lead PH-Glade Spring (5-10, 2-8). \

At Ballard (W.Va.) Christian Academy, George Wood scored 34 points as the Indians crushed the Eagles in a non-district game.
Donnie Costigan had 23 points for Boys' Home (10-7) while Chris Hicks added 16 and Greg Kier 14 points and 12 assists.
Ballard (2-13) had only four players score. Leslie Spencer exploded for 42 points, his brother Kennie Spencer added 12 and Steve Bennett 10. \
Fieldale-Collinsville 83

DRY FORK - First-half shooting was the difference as the Cavaliers (12-4, 10-4) rolled up a big lead and coasted to the Piedmont District victory over the Trojans (10-7, 8-6).
Fieldale-Collinsville made 19 of 37 from the floor compared with Tunstall's 16 of 48 to take a 41-27 halftime lead. Tunstall outscored F-C 43-42 in the second half but never got closer than eight points.
Lemuel Jones led the winners with 20 points, followed by Thad Wade with 18 and Scott Chitwood with 17. Khris Law paced Tunstall with 20 and Hubert Atkins had 17. \

LEBANON - Aaron Fuller, Ben Campbell and Brian Summers combined for 41 points as the Hogoheegee District-leading Pioneers routed the Indians.
Fuller led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Campbell added 13 points and Summers had 11. Lebanon (12-2, 11-0) broke away from a 29-21 halftime lead with a 15-3 third-quarter run.
Steven Pratt had 15 points to lead Rural Retreat (2-13, 2-9). \

CASTLEWOOD - Jeff Bourne and Tracy Brown scored 19 points each as the Maroons rolled past the Blue Devils for a Hogoheegee district win.
O.J. Williams was the lone double-digit scorer for Castlewood (6-9, 5-6) with 28 points. \

ROCKY MOUNT - Shannon Conley's basket with 10 seconds left in overtime lifted the Eagles past the Pioneers in a non-district game.
Franklin County (10-6) rallied from a 13-point deficit with two minutes left in regulation to force overtime. Patricia Campbell's layup with eight seconds left in regulation tied the game at 47.
Michelle Payne paced Heritage with 22 points. \

\ Oak Hill 91, Concord (N.C.) 74: At Davidson (N.C.) College, Jerry Stackhouse scored 33 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in leading Oak Hill Academy of Mouth of Wilson, Va., over Concord, N.C. Jeff McInnis had 16 points and 13 assists for Oak Hill (24-0), and Makhtar Ndiaye had 10 rebounds and eight points. Oak Hill is ranked No. 3 in the nation by USA Today. \
