WYTHE, BLAND SUSPEND TALKS WITH TRASH-DISPOSAL COMPANY

Wythe and Bland counties have suspended negotiations with a trash disposal firm in Amelia County to dispose of their solid waste.

The Joint Public Service Authority for both counties voted unanimously last week to stop negotiating with Chambers Corp. for a disposal contract, after months of talking with the corporation.

Members of the authority felt they could get better terms from some other contractor and expressed concerns about financial problems Chambers had had recently.

The authority is having land appraised for a trash transfer station, to which solid waste would be hauled for transportation by truck or rail to a private landfill somewhere else.

The new landfill site has not been chosen. But the counties no longer will be able to use Wythe County's landfill after October, because of new regulations effective then.
