TECH RETIRES VOLLEYBALL STAR'S NUMBER
Virginia Tech retired the jersey of volleyball player Lisa Pikalek and also presented her the Frank Loria Award for academic excellence, leadership and athletic skill, during a halftime ceremony at the Tech-Virginia Commonwealth men's basketball game Saturday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.Pikalek becomes only the second female and seventh student-athelte in school history to have her jersey, No. 12, retired from use.
She finished sixth on the American Volleyball Coaches Association career kills list with 2,770. With a grade-point average of 3.96, she was voted a GTE Academic All-America first-team member and the GTE Academic All-American of the Year.
This season, she had a school and Metro Conference-record 653 kills and 488 digs. In four years as a Hokie, she helped Virginia Tech to a 94-56 overall record, its first-ever regional ranking and first postseason appearance in 12 years.
