TECH COACH 1ST IN OWN MEET AT RECTOR
Virginia Tech women's track coach Lori Taylor, of Fincastle, captured first place in the 3,000 meters as the Hokies played host to an indoor meet at Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg.Taylor, while running for Blue Ridge Asics, won with a time of 10 minutes, 8.3 seconds. All-Metro cross country runner Heidi Allen returned to indoor competition with a fourth-place finish in the same event.
Senior Dorthea Ku placed in three events for the Hokies. The Fairfax senior finished third in the 55-meter high hurdles, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump. Senior Nancy Gilmore won the 20-pound weight event with a toss of 11.98.
Christopher Newport track and cross country coach Vince Brown, who has won seven NCAA Division III national championships, was selected this year's recipient of the Walt Cormack Award, presented annually to a collegiate coach in recognition of outstanding service to track and field in Virginia.
The award was presented in a ceremony at the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington and voted upon by a committee of coaches and sportswriters. Cormack was an indoor track pioneer in Virginia and coached at VMI for 30 years before his death in 1976.
Brown also had a successful high school coaching career at Chilhowie, Blacksburg and Hampton, and he was an assistant track coach at Virginia Tech for one season.
