THREE WIN HONORS AT TECH BANQUET

Jerome Preston, Mark Poindexter and Kirk Alexander were major award winners at the banquet honoring the 1992 Virginia Tech football team.

Preston, a defensive tackle from Martinsville, won the Most Valuable Player award, while Poindexter, a fullback from Rocky Mount, was honored as the top senior.

Alexander, who plays safety, won the John William Schneider Award, which is given to players who have excelled in football, academics and leadership.

Preston had a total of 70 tackles, including seven quarterback sacks and five other tackles for losses. Poindexter rushed for 420 yards and caught 15 passes for 163 yards. Alexander had 66 tackles, intercepted three passes and broke up 11.

Also honored for the top performance at their positions in 1992 were Ken Brown, linebacker; Tyrone Drakeford, defensive backfield; Jim Pyne, offensive line; Antonio Freeman, receiver; Tony Kennedy, offensive backfield; and James DePoy and Brian Reaves, specialists.

Four players, tight end John Burke, linebacker P.J. Preston, Drakeford and Pyne have been selected permanent captains of the 1993 Hokie team.
