FERRUM ROLLS TO ANOTHER HOME WIN

Jerry Scarborough scored 23 points as Ferrum defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 93-82 in a Dixie Conference basketball game Saturday night.

Ferrum (15-5) had the game under control with a 46-36 lead by halftime, but "we let them come back on us a little bit at the end," Ferrum coach Bill Pullen said.

Pullen said the victory will help the Panthers move up in the NCAA Division III South Region rankings. Ferrum was ranked fifth going into the week, and Roanoke lost while Ferrum won twice. Christopher Newport is ranked No. 1 in the region.

The Panthers, who have won 14 home games in a row dating to last season, have three conference games remaining, two at home.

Wesleyan was led by Robert Bland's 31 points. Bland was 10-of-15 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Walter Webb had 17 points for Ferrum, and Quincy Quick added 14. \

RADFORD - Doug Day scored 31 points, including a 7-of-14 shooting performance from 3-point range, as the Highlanders downed Winthrop in the Big South Conference.

Radford (11-12, 5-5) trailed 55-52 after Jeff Pickard made an inside jumper. The Highlanders then went on a 17-1 run, with Day hitting three 3-pointers, to take a 69-56 lead with 13:19 remaining. Day holds the NCAA Division I career record for 3-pointers made with 373.

Winthrop (10-9, 4-5) could not regain the lead as Radford led by 21 points.

LaShawn Coulter led Winthrop with 22 points. Radford got 21 points from Don Burgess, and 16 points and 14 assists from Brian Schmall. \

EMORY - Derek Elmore scored 21 points to lead the Wasps past the Eagles in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Emory & Henry (18-2 overall, 13-1 ODAC) led 31-28 at intermission despite a first half in which the Wasps made 38 percent of their field-goal attempts. They shot 50 percent overall and had a 34-26 rebounding average.

Bridgewater (10-9, 8-6) got 19 points from Dan Rush. \

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Lester Lyons scored 12 points and Curley Young had 11 as the Pirates defeated the Colonial Athletic Association-leading Dukes.

James Madison led 32-30 at the half, but the Pirates (7-12, 2-6) used a pressure defense and superior rebounding to tie the score 42-42 with 12:55 left.

James Madison's Darren McLinton, who led the Dukes (15-5, 7-1) with 11 points, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have given his team the victory. \

NORFOLK - Mario Mullen scored 22 points as the Monarchs beat the Patriots in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The loss was the 18th straight in the conference for George Mason (5-16, 0-8), tying it with Navy and East Carolina for record number of consecutive CAA losses. For Old Dominion (14-5, 6-2), it was sixth consecutive victory and 10th in 12 games. \

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Kenny Wood scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Spiders (10-7, 6-2) defeated the Seahawks (12-6, 4-4) in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Richmond pulled ahead 36-27 at the half behind 58 percent field-goal shooting, compared with the Seahawks' 43 percent. The Spiders did even better in the second half, making 71 percent of their field goals to the Seahawks' 44 percent. \

William and Mary 77

WILLIAMSBURG - Brian Gilgeous scored 32 points, including 4-of-4 free-throw shooting in the game's final 41 seconds, as the Eagles beat the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Gilgeous put American (7-11, 4-4) ahead 71-66 on a 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining. American then made 11 of 12 free throws to keep William and Mary (11-9, 3-5) from coming back. American was 29-of-31 from the line for the game. \

LYNCHBURG - The Flames (14-7, 8-2) won their ninth consecutive game, getting 19 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks from Julius Nwosu in the Big South Conference victory over the Camels (8-11, 6-3).

\ Christopher Newport 87, Greensboro 77: At Newport News, Ted Berry and Steve Artis each scored 23 points to lead the Captains (18-3, 6-1) to the Dixie Conference victory over Greensboro (13-7, 5-2). It is the Captains' 11th victory in 12 meetings against Greensboro.

\ Elizabeth City State 98, Virginia State 92: At Ettrick, Nate Higgs led a balanced Vikings attack with 26 points as Elizabeth City (16-6, 11-4) defeated the Trojans (8-12, 5-9) in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

\ Hampton 86, St. Paul's 77: At Hampton, Derett Boyd scored 24 points and Kevin Gregory added 23 as the Pirates (12-9, 6-3) beat the Tigers (4-18, 1-9) in CIAA play. Melvin Jones led St. Paul's with 24 points.

\ Randolph-Macon 63, Lynchburg 59: At Ashland, Kurt Axe scored 18 points as the Yellow Jackets (12-7, 8-5) defeated the Hornets (5-14, 3-10) for the 34th time in 36 meetings in an ODAC game.

\ Roanoke College JV 106, Virginia Western CC 83: Brian Blaney got all of his team-high 21 points on 3-pointers as the Maroons defeated the host Blue Stars. VWCC (5-6) was led by Doug Hylton with 22 and Brian Hale with 19.

\ Virginia Wesleyan 78, Guilford 76: At Norfolk, Walt Lassiter scored 13 points, five in overtime, as the Blue Marlins (14-5 10-3) came back from a 24-point deficit to defeat the Quakers in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Guilford (10-9, 7-8) led 56-32 with 15:04 remaining.
