NORTHSIDE DOMINATES BLUE RIDGE MEET
Northside wrestlers won five championships Saturday night as the Vikings rolled past William Byrd for the Blue Ridge District title at William Byrd High School in Vinton.The top four wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the Region III tournament next Friday and Saturday at Bassett.
Mark Mast (112 pounds), Clifton Dunford (119), Jacob Mayes (135), Robin Keeling (140) and Bryan VanRavenstein (160) won individual titles for Northside, which finished with 222.5 points.
William Byrd, with 155 points, had three champions - Patrick Henderson (125), Jason Hogan (145) and Kyle Hamman (heavyweight).
Michael Hatcher was the lone champion for Salem, which placed third with 135 points. Alleghany won no championships but was fourth with 94 points.
\ Northwestern Region
MANASSAS - Franklin County qualified for the Group AAA state dual meet by finishing second in the Northwestern Region duals.
The Eagles lost 30-21 to Stonewall Jackson in the championship match. The state meet will be March 5-6 at Stonewall Jackson High School.
Hassani Meneffee (152 pounds) won three matches for Franklin County, as did Derek Poindexter (160) and Thomas Simmons (145). Jarrett Vadon (103) won two of three matches.
William Fleming was beaten 49-12 by Stonewall Jackson in the first round.
\ Seminole District
LYNCHBURG - Regular-season champion Brookville won three individual championships as the Bees captured the Seminole District.
John Willse (130 pounds), Chris Lukanich (135) and Cory Stueck (152) won individual titles for the Bees, who scored 175 points.
Liberty was a close second with 168.5 points. The Minutemen also won three championships - Burrell Ragland (125), Michael Heller (140) and Terry Overstreet (160).
Todd Huddleston (112) and Chris Huddleston (119) won championships for Staunton River, which scored 127 points.
Chris Watts of Liberty was selected coach of the year and Burrell Ragland, also of Liberty, was picked wrestler of the year.
