OBIT GIBSON, WILLIAM LLOYD JR.
GIBSON, William Lloyd Jr., 83, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, February 6,
1993, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a son of W. L. Gibson Sr. and
Amanda Monroe Gibson of Lynchburg. Widely known as "Hoot" Gibson, he spent his
entire professional life at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he attained
the rank of full professor before retirement. In 1972, Dr. Gibson was the
second person to receive the Wine Award for teaching excellence, and when he
retired from V.P.I., a scholarship was established in his name by former
students. Dr. Gibson was a long-time member of the Blacksburg United Methodist
Church, serving as the treasurer for many years. He was named as an honorary
member of the Administrative Board for life, in recognition for his many years
of faithful service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Opal
Hurd "Tillie" Gibson, and a sister, Ann Blankenship. Surviving are two
sisters, Nell Mattox of Lynchburg, Ruby Lavinder of Roanoke; and nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, February 8, at
Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Hobbs officiating.
Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends
Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
