TEACHER OF THE WEEK
COLLEEN FREDERICK Fifth grade Falling Branch Elementary"Children learn more from each other than they could ever learn from a book," says Colleen Frederick, a fifth-grade teacher in Christiansburg. That's why Frederick is a strong advocate of "cooperative learning," or having children of all abilities working together.
Raising her pupils' self-esteem is another of Frederick's objectives in the classroom. "If the children don't feel good about themselves, I can't teach them," she said. "I want to be their friend."
"Work is challenging and interesting," with Frederick said the pupils who nominated her. Frederick, who has taught for seven years, said she especially enjoys teaching science and social studies. Units on black history and reports on states are two of her pupils' major projects.
Married and the mother of a step-daughter, 7, Frederick moved to Virginia from Montana. She has a cat and enjoys collecting stamps, cooking and sewing.
