PULASKI TEACHER, WRITER DEAD AT 82
Marie Elmore Baxter, who died Sunday at the age of 82 after a long illness, was an author of short stories, poems and religious material, but she was primarily a teacher.She taught at Snowville, where she was born, for 14 years and then taught in Pulaskie for 25 years. She had lived in Pulaski with her husband, the late O. Peck Baxter, since they were married in 1944.
She retired from teaching in mid-1976 but not from writing or traveling. She visited all but one of the 50 states as well as 16 other countries, and won a number of poetry contests at local, district and state levels. Some of her writing appeared in national magazines.
She even wrote her own obituary.
A graduate of what is now Radford University, she had been active in many organizations including the Poetry Society of Virginia, Pulaski Music Club, Friends of the Library and Pulaski Woman's Club. When she was a member of Snowville Christian Church, she organized its first youth group. She was later a member of the Pulaski Christian Church, where she served as guild president and as a district secretary, and most recently of First United Methodist Church in Pulaski.
Her funeral is today at 2 p.m. at the Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
