PIONEERS NOTCH UPSET
Steve Widner had 23 points and Jody Burnett added 20 as Fort Chiswell surprised Grayson County 77-72 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Monday night.Burnett had 11 points in the third quarter, when the Pioneers outscored Grayson County 19-8 to take control. B.W. Hill added 15 points for Fort Chiswell.
Grayson County, which fell into a tie for first place in the district with Galax, got 20 points from Mitch Hawks. Shane Griffith and Gibson Satterwhite added 11 points each for the Blue Devils (12-4 overall, 11-2 district). \

TAZEWELL - The Bulldogs built a 14-point lead during the second quarter then fought off several Bobcats rallies to win the non-district game.
Tazewell (10-6) hit 11 of 18 free throws; Radford (6-11) was 14-for-21.
Radford's Chris Smith led all scorers with 29 points, and Matt Linkous added 11.
Mike Hairston's 18 points led Tazewell, Derek Jones added 15, Eric Clifton put in 13 and Mike Kidd had 10. \

Mercer (W.Va.) 69
MERCER, W.Va. - The Crusaders (10-1) got 24 points from Sam Moore, 23 from David Arthur and 17 from point guard Brad Ewing in defeating host Mercer.
Arthur and Moore helped control the inside play for Gateway Christian, which trailed by four points during the third quarter and rallied to win. Gateway Christian's biggest lead was eight points.
Matthew Miller led Mercer with 30 points. \
