TWO QUARTERHORSES DIE AFTER CARS HIT THEM
Two quarterhorses died as a result of injuries sustained when they were hit by cars on High Rock Hill Road Monday morning. The accident on Virginia 612 was reported at about 6:20 a.m., according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Kathy VanDyke, who owns a horse that was on the road with others, said one horse died as a result of being hit by a car and another 22-year-old had to be put to sleep. Those two horses belonged to her sister.
The horses apparently got onto the road after going through a fence in two places, VanDyke said.
Riner Fire Chief Jay Altizer said one horse was struck by one car and another car struck the second horse. Two people were sent to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, Altizer said.
The state trooper who worked the accident was on midnight shift and his report was not available, a state police officer said.
