FORT CHISWELL NOTCHES UPSET

Steve Widner had 23 points and Jody Burnett added 20 as Fort Chiswell surprised Grayson County 77-72 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Monday.

Burnett had 11 points in the third quarter, when the Pioneers outscored Grayson County 19-8 to take control. B.W. Hill added 15 points for the winners.

Grayson County, which fell into a tie for first place in the district with Galax, got 20 points from Mitch Hawks. Shane Griffith and Gibson Satterwhite added 11 points each for the Blue Devils (12-4 overall, 11-2 district). \

RURAL RETREAT - The Indians led nearly the whole game and made their free throws down the stretch to defeat Pocahontas in a non-district game.

Bradley Guynn scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Stephen Pratt had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Houseman added 12 points for Rural Retreat (3-13), which dominated the rebounding 55-28.

Jason Keaton led Pocahontas (7-7) with 22 points. \

COVINGTON - Donnie Costigan scored 26 points to lead six Indians in double figures as Covington Boys' Home held off Rainelle Christian (W.Va.).

Costigan and Greg Kier scored 10 points each in the fourth quarter when the Indians (12-7) pulled away.

Chris Hicks added 19 points and Patrick Hall 16. Kier, George Wood, and Scottie Forbes each contributed 12 points.

Ryan Fitzwater paced Rainelle Christian (11-6) with 27 points. Brian Lego had 25 and Paul Staffer 14, including four 3-pointers. \
