RECRUITING'S ON UPSWING HERE
Large corporations continue to recruit at colleges, even though they may have a limited number of job openings, said\ Toni McLawhorn, director of career planning and placement for\ Roanoke College."They are hesitant to recruit when they have no specific openings. But at the same time . . . some are concerned that if they don't keep coming, when they really need to hire their image will be lost.
"We're finding more local businesses are using our office - personal service businesses, retailing establishments and individuals who have their own businesses," she said.
"The students have heard so much about the job market and the problems inherent with recessionary times that we're really busy," said\ Rol Walters, head of career placement at\ Radford University. The number of campus recruiters - 30 have signed up so far this semester and more are expected - is up slightly from last year.
"I think last year was the bottoming out," he said. "Now we're on an upward trend.
"Nurses can basically walk out the door and get a job," he said. Some other fields are doing more hiring because of demographics. At a recent job fair, representatives from 56 educational institutions from five states saw more than 200 students. - LESLIE TAYLOR and MADELYN ROSENBERG
