WEEK HAD PLENTY OF BIG PLAYS FROM KEY PLAYERS AROUND VALLEY

Big plays, big players, close games - the past week had them all.

Better late than never:

Pulaski County's Montie Brown didn't score many points in a 60-59 win against Cave Spring on Friday night. But late in the game he was instrumental in the Cougars' come-from-behind win. Three times he flung the ball at the hoop and three times it went in.

One key play he made was a late third-quarter assist to Chris Foster that helped the Cougars erase a six-point deficit and tie the game at 36. Then, with 1:19 left in the game, he sank two free throws that gave the Cougars a 58-56 lead after clawing back from a another six-point deficit.

After two Pulaski County fouls and a turnover, the Knights pulled the score to 58-57. Then Cave Spring's Robbie Hibbs, who put on a shooting clinic all night, drove the lane for a layup that gave the Knights a 59-58 advantage.

The Cougars called time-out with :38 left, and upon taking the floor nearly turned the ball over. But they got their offense reset and reversed the ball to get it to Brown near the top of the key.

Brown dribbled into traffic on the right side and was stifled by the Knights' defense. He pulled up and drained a fall-away 10-foot jumper that gave Pulaski a 60-59 Roanoke Valley District win.

Same score. Different ending:

At Radford High, Chris Hairston took a pass from Matt Linkous and drove to the basket for a layup with 12 seconds in regulation to send the Bobcats into overtime with Blacksburg. Either team could have won in regulation, but Blacksburg's Greg Shockley missed a 25-foot three-pointer. Then Hairston shot a jumper from the right corner that hit the top of the backboard. In the end, it was Blacksburg's Curtis Strager who canned two free throws with 12 seconds left in overtime to give Blacksburg a 60-59 win - and the Indians clinched at least a tie for the NRD title.

Long way to go and a short time to get there:

Christiansburg picked up its second season win and first New River District win by scoring five points in 13 seconds to beat Carroll County 51-50. Carroll led the Demons 50-46 on the strength of a 17-point effort from John Wofford. Then the Demons' Kevin McDowell was fouled with :30 in the game. McDowell hit the first shot and rebounded the miss from his second and drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 50-49. John Hairston followed with a jumper with :17 left in the game.

OT in the MED:

Mitch Hawks fired six three-pointers and tallied a game-high 29 points for Grayson County in a 60-58 overtime win over Auburn. The Eagles outscored Grayson 11-6 in the fourth quarter to put the game into overtime. But Jamie Robinson and Dennis Roberts sealed the win with free throws toward the end of overtime.
