CHEATING COULD OUST 28 FROM ANNAPOLIS

Twenty-eight midshipmen could face expulsion in the U.S. Naval Academy's largest cheating incident since 1974, a spokesman said Tuesday.

An investigation produced evidence that 28 midshipmen may have cheated on an electrical engineering examination last year, academy spokesman Cmdr. Mike John said.

The investigation began in December after officials learned that a copy of the final exam for the junior-level course was missing.

Midshipmen also told officials that copies were being circulated in the academy's dormitory before the exam, said Noel Milan, another academy spokesman.

The academy decided to go ahead with the examination, which was given to about 700 students. "There's no evidence to believe the exam was compromised to the extent that it would have to be retaken," John said.
