DOWNTOWN PULASKI PLANS WHEELIN' THRU WINTER
Something that started as a model contest a few years ago will grow into an all-day event called Wheelin' Thru Winter Feb. 27 in downtown Pulaski. The event will include a race for radio-controlled cars and trucks, an antique car show, a bicycle clinic and the fourth annual model contest created by Karen Graham of the Somethin' Fishy pet and hobby shop.
Graham had 250 entries last year in the plastic models competition by people from here to North Carolina, she said, "so I thought, well, why don't I just involve the whole town?"
After meeting with officials from Pulaski and the Pulaski Main Street program, the activities began being lined up.
The model contest, to be held at Somethin' Fishy, will have competition in three age groups for aviation, amphibious, cars and trucks, race cars and other categories. The entry fee is $1 per class and a limit of three models for each class entered.
The bicycle clinic also will be held at Somethin' Fishy, with three bike experts on hand to provide free adjustment of handlebars, seats, chains and other bike parts at no charge. There also will be an obstacle course for youngsters to ride.
The Dad's Day Off hobby store in Radford will sponsor the radio-controlled vehicle races, to be known as the Pulaski Grand Prix. It will be held on Main Street between Jefferson and Washington streets in front of the Pulaski County Courthouse and has a $5 registration fee.
Pulaski Main Street will sponsor the antique car show offering three trophies in each of nine classes. There is a $10 registration fee.
Other activities will include flights by radio-controlled airplanes in a demonstration by the Flying Aces Plane Display Club, sidewalk and store sales all day by Main Street businesses, food and drinks available and other surprises.
A new restaurant is scheduled to open in downtown Pulaski during the Wheelin' Thru Winter celebration. Some of the antique stores recently announced for downtown Pulaski also will be open by then.
"It's just going to be an all-day affair, and we're going to try to make it an annual thing," Graham said. February is usually a month for the blahs, she said, "and we just thought we'd kind of race through it."
Further information and registration forms for the various events are available by writing to Pulaski Main Street Inc., P.O.
