LANCERS CLINCH TIE FOR PIEDMONT CROWN

Patrick County's slow-down approach didn't work as Laurel Park blasted the Cougars 66-34 in a Piedmont District boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

With the win, the undefeated Lancers (17-0, 15-0) clinched at least a tie for the district title. Only Magna Vista can catch Laurel Park and the two teams play in Martinsville on Feb. 19.

The Lancers, three-time defending regular season Piedmont champs, are now 50-1 in district play the past three seasons.

Lonzey Robertson scored 14 points to lead Laurel Park, which cranked up the running game with a 26-point fourth quarter.

Chris Reynolds scored 17 for the Cougars (4-13, 2-13), who had just 20 points after three quarters. z

Fieldale-Collinsville 75\ Martinsville 73

COLLINSVILLE - Keith Hodge hit a 10-footer from the baseline with five seconds left as the Cavaliers nipped the Bulldogs in a Piedmont District game.

Fieldale-Collinsville (13-4, 11-4) was up 73-69 with 1:13 remaining, but Martinsville (13-4, 11-4) took advantage of a couple of Cavalier turnovers to climb back in it. Maurice Spencer's basket with 35 seconds left tied the score at 73.

Lemuel Jones with 22 points and Scott Chitwood with 16 led the Cavaliers. Spencer and Mike Martin each had 20 for the Bulldogs.

Alleghany 74\ Rockbridge County 66

LEXINGTON - Michael Hunter scored a career-high 42 points as the Mountaineers rolled over the Wildcats for a Blue Ridge District win.

Alleghany (15-2, 4-2) led 30-29 at halftime but stretched its lead to eight in the second half for the win.

Marty Early scored 22 points and Kenny Lewis added 15 to lead Rockbridge County (8-10, 1-7).

Parry McCluer 75\ Covington 57

BUENA VISTA - Brian Sizemore scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, leading the Fighting Blues to a come-from-behind win in the Pioneer District.

Parry McCluer (12-5, 7-3) trailed 30-29 at halftime before outscoring Covington (7-8, 4-4) by 19 in the second half.

Nathan Baker added 19 points for the winners. Chuck Morris and Van Wallace had 16 each for the Cougars.

Northwood 76\ Rural Retreat 60

RURAL RETREAT - Neal Booth scored 15 of his 18 points in the third quarter as the Panthers pulled away for a Hogoheegee District win.

John Griffin led Northwood (14-5, 10-3) with 32 points and Johnny Cregger added 15.

For the Indians (3-14, 2-10), Bo Lethco scored 16 points, Stephen Pratt had 13 and Bradley Guynn helped out with six points and 16 rebounds.

John Battle 60\ Marion 59

MARION - Brett Jones hit a baseline jumper with three seconds remaining to lift the Trojans to the Highlands District victory over the Scarlet Hurricane.

Jones finished with 15 points. Josh McCall scored 18 to lead the Trojans (5-12, 3-5).

Brian Cregger had 13 points for Marion (8-10, 3-5).
