MISSING MAN'S BODY RECOVERED FROM LAKE

A man who had been missing since early Monday after leaving a party near Smith Mountain Lake was found drowned Tuesday.

David Earl Tripp, 25, of South Dakota, was found by searchers around 11:30 a.m. after they resumed a search that was called off at dark on Monday. Tripp's body was found in the lake near where he had disappeared in the Pleasure Point subdivision in Goodview, said Bedford County Sheriff Carl Wells.

It appeared that Tripp drowned and foul play is not suspected, Wells said. An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner in Roanoke to determine an official cause of death.

Wells said Tripp apparently had been drinking at a party in a trailer at the lake early Monday, wandered off about 2 a.m. and ended up in the water. Tripp's parents in South Dakota told Wells that their son was a poor swimmer.

Tripp was in Virginia looking for work, his parents told Wells, and had been staying with friends in the Roanoke area.
