BLACKSBURG SLIPS PAST FRANKLIN COUNTY 72-70
Craig Turman hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining Tuesday night to boost Blacksburg to a 72-70 victory over Franklin County in a non-district boys' basketball game.A 3-pointer by Franklin County's Charles Muse had tied the score at 70-70. Turman was fouled on the inbounds play.
Blacksburg (7-11) hit 12 straight free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Eagles (9-8) in check. Turman hit eight in a row.
Ben Araman scored 22 points and Jay Safford 20 to pace the Indians. Franklin County got 17 points from Jammie Hale.
Auburn 78\ Galax 69
RINER - Sophomore post man Terry Millirons took over in the second half, scoring 32 of his career-high 36 points as the Eagles stormed from behind to whip the Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District game.
Auburn (11-6, 9-5) trailed 40-29 at halftime before the 6-foot-3 Millirons took command, scoring inside at will. Todd Collins, Andy Johnson and B.J. Lumia all contributed 10 points for the winners.
Jeff Spells had 30 points and Wilbert Campbell 25 for Galax (12-4, 11-3).
Graham 55\ Christiansburg 41
CHRISTIANSBURG - Fred Adams and Jay Gray combined for six 3-pointers and 28 points to lead the G-Men to a non-district win over the Demons.
Cornell Cooke added 11 points and Kyron Kelley had 10 for Graham (9-9), which outscored the Demons 18-8 in the second quarter.
John Hairston led Christiansburg (2-16) with 14 points.
Floyd County 83\ Shawsville 58
FLOYD - Jason Light scored 19 points as the Buffaloes stampeded the Shawnees in a Mountain Empire District game.
Floyd County (12-4, 12-3) also got 14 points from Jeremiah Slusher, including four 3-pointers, and 12 from Mike Hylton.
Keith Martin had 25 and Darrell Bibb 21 to lead Shawsville (2-16, 1-14), which trailed 42-15 at halftime.
Staunton River 50\ Nelson County 43
MONETA - Senior Mike Williams took charge and the Golden Eagles rallied for a Seminole District victory over the Governors.
Williams had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals as Staunton River improved to 9-8. Williams, a 5-foot-6 guard, also shut down Anthony Turner, a leading scorer for Nelson County coming off a 29-point performance against Amherst County on Friday.
Staunton River's rally was sparked by Roger Thomas who had 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter when the Golden Eagles outscored Nelson County 20-14. Eric Flood added 11 points for the winners.
The Governors (13-4), which led 18-16 at halftime, were paced by Tyrone Revely with 13 points, Dan Revely with 12 and Tommy Vaughan with 11.
Amherst 61\ Jefferson Forest 50
FOREST - Justin Johannes scored 28 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Lancers rolled past the Cavaliers for a Seminole District victory.
The score was tied at 40 after three quarters. Johannes scored 14 points in the fourth quarter as Amherst (15-2) outscored Jefferson Forest 21-10 for the win.
Thomas Sweeney scored 12 points and Anthony Poindexter added 10 to lead Jefferson Forest (9-8).
\ Gateway Christian 73\ Ballard Christian 61
BALLARD, W.Va. - Brad Ewing and Sam Moore each scored 19 points, leading the Crusaders to their 11th win in 12 games.
Leslie Spencer led the Eagles (2-15) with 20 points.
\ Narrows 54\ Rocky Gap 48
NARROWS - The Green Wave rode big efforts from Sean Harris and Anthony Wiley to record the Mountain Empire District win.
Harris had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Wiley had 10 points and 16 rebounds as Narrows (6-11, 5-10) snapped an eight-game losing streak.
Frank Nunley had 15 points and Eric Faulkner 12 for Rocky Gap (1-15, 1-14), which led by one heading to the fourth quarter.
Fort Chiswell 79\ Giles 66
MAX MEADOWS - Steve Widner had 32 points and the Pioneers fought off a furious rally by the Spartans to win the Mountain Empire game.
Fort Chiswell (12-5, 10-5) led 33-17 at halftime but was outscored 49-46 in the second half.
Matt Chumbley added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers while B.W. Hill had 11 points.
For Giles (6-10, 5-9), Tim Williams and Marty Smith scored 12 each and Patrick Steele added 10.
Grayson County 33\ Bland 31
BLAND - David Lambert tossed in 11 points as the Blue Devils outlasted undermanned Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District game.
Bland (9-8, 7-8) dressed only seven players. Among the missing were starting center Jes Selfe (sick) and leading scorer Kevin King (out three weeks with a broken hand).
Grayson County is 13-4, 12-2.
